We are persons and we have a mind. There is no mind without a person, as there is no car without a driver. Or can you imagine a car to be built without the preceding idea of driving it?
Of course, the universal mind is the mind of a person, too: The mind of the universal person, an expansion of the Original Personality of Godhead, Vishnu. This special expansion is called Garbhodakasayi Vishnu.
You might think that this is some mythological superstition, but it is in no way more mythological than your very own existence.
This person - Garbhodakasayi Vishnu - expands Himself in as many as there are living entities in the universe, i.e. He enters each and every atom as Antaryami.
His consciousness is the interconnecting and unifying substance in the whole universe. By this presence in every atom and by the all pervading energy field of his consciousness everyone and everything is interconnected with everything and everyone else. We all live in the mind field of the Supreme Lord.
